What is the Restored Lives course?

Relationship breakdown can be the hardest experience of a person’s life. No one should have to face it on their own. By joining one of our courses we hope you will become part of a local group nearby where you can feel supported.

We offer eight-session courses that welcomes you into a small group of people who are also facing separation or divorce. Together we explore all the challenges commonly faced when a relationship breaks down, from the emotional struggles to the practical issues including legal and financial matters.

We have consolidated expertise from professional counsellors, family law solicitors, mediators and parenting specialists to create a course that is stuffed with practical tips that will help you navigate your separation or divorce and reduce the harm of the process as much as possible.

Usually we run about 40 courses across the UK and more overseas, for full details scroll to the bottom of this page. We also run Restored Lives At Home – Which is the online version of our course which you can join from anywhere (we will try to group you with local people whenever possible)

What’s it Like

Meet others

Restored Lives is typically run one evening per week for eight weeks. Each evening starts at around 7 pm (some variation by venue) either in person or online with a virtual cuppa. There’s time to connect with the other guests and the leaders and helpers who usually have first-hand experience of going through separation or divorce. Lots of courses provide a simple meal or refreshments.

Listen to talks

Each session includes a talk which is either delivered in person or as a video link that explores different topics including:
– Facing what’s happened
– Communication and conflict resolution
– Letting go
– Managing the effect on other relationships, including children
– Legal matters
– Being single and moving on

Discuss in small groups

In small groups of six to eight people, there’s an opportunity to discuss the talk. You can share as much or as little as you like about how your personal situation relates to the topic. Restored Lives is a non-judgemental safe space where you can speak to others who have or are facing similar situations.

Hear Personal Stories

We end each evening with a personal story of recovery. You’ll hear from past participants of the course explaining what happened to them and the key things they did to overcome their challenges so they could live a fully restored life.

  • "It helped me identify the bitterness I felt, showed me a way to deal with it and gave me hope for the future. Thank you so much!"

    - Helen, Restored Lives Participant

  • "Seeing others, going through the same hurts and struggles, made me realise that I was "allowed" to laugh again..."

    - Lisa, Restored Lives Participant

  • "It has given me the building blocks which I can refer to in order to move forward and create a positive future whilst also managing the divorce to gain a positive result."

    - Paula, Restored Lives Participant

  • "Thank you for all you have done. Thank you for your encouragement and hope!"

    - Jessica, Online Restored Lives Participant

  • "You have made the group so easy for us to share and come away feeling an awful lot better on a Monday evening - I am not sure I would be feeling so positive (some of the time) without having these Monday evenings."

    - Mark, Online Restored Lives Participant

  • "It is great having people that understand what I'm going through because they have actually been there or are going through the same."

    - Richard, Restored Lives Participant

  • "The best thing about the course is having free and frank conversations with each other about our journeys, emotions, past and future. It is a sustained conversation, not just one night or a weekend"

    - Jenny, Restored Lives Participant

  • "The best thing about the course is being connected to a group of people who were in a similar position as I am and hearing how they were handling their situation. Reading the book or watching the videos alone would have been difficult without having a group to discuss with. "

    - Kristen, Restored Lives Participant

  • "Balanced, realistic, practical, non-judgemental. Ability to be honest as you were with complete strangers!!!"

    - Jon, Restored Lives Participant

  • "Being able to share my feelings with other people in a similar position, not feeling alone as none of my circle of friends are going through this thankfully!!"

    - Jing, Restored Lives Participant

Who is it for?

Restored Lives is for anyone who is going through or has been through the breakdown of a significant relationship. This includes civil partnerships and cohabiting couples, recent breakups as well as those that ended years ago.

Most of our courses are run by Churches because the charity was founded by Christians who felt a calling to come alongside heartbroken people but it has also been run by mediators and community groups in front rooms, pubs, offices and even a bakery. The course content is not religious, it is designed for people of all faiths and none. You won’t be judged and nobody is trying to convert you. For Christians attending the course or anyone who is interested, we have optional content that looks at what the bible says about divorce and considers the faith aspects of separation and divorce.

What about me?

I’ve just got separated and I can’t think, I’ll wait until I’m more ‘together’ – Sometimes we feel overwhelmed but just having people around you who understand what you are going through will help. Come and soak it in.

I’m in the middle of a legal battle, I’ll wait – Legal battles can be exhausting. Many people have found that the course helps them through these intense times and gives them the strength and headspace to make good decisions.

My divorce was over 10 years ago, is it too late? – There’s no time limit on processing emotions. If you have just finished another relationship or still feel impacted by a breakup, then the course will help you.

I was never actually married – Heartbreak caused by the end of any committed relationship can be just as painful as divorce. The course is available for anyone who is struggling as the result of a breakup.

I can’t talk about my situation without getting emotional – There’s nothing to worry about, this is a normal healthy reaction. The course is a safe, non-threatening place. Nobody will judge you, we understand what a tough time this is. Although there is an opportunity for group discussions there is no pressure to say anything if you don’t want to.

I’m not a church-goer. – This course is designed for you. Yes, it’s been developed by a bunch of people at a church, but it’s all about giving you the practical tools and support to get through a relationship breakdown. Don’t worry, it’s non-judgemental and unthreatening.
